The Bosman I Like
A personal selection
by Patrick Mynhardt
Herman Charles Bosman and Patrick Mynhardt are today closely associated household names in South Africa. Since 1963 when Bosman’s collections of short stories were re-published, more than 200 000 copies of his books have been sold. And since Patrick Mynhardt presented the first of approximately 2 000 one-man shows on Bosman’s writings in 1969 about one million people all over South Africa, South West Africa, Zimbabwe and Swaziland have come to love the Bosman characters, like the famous Oom Schalk Lourens, the seemingly simple old Boer from the Marico district, who is really the embodiment of sly humour.
Roy Campbell wrote to Bosman: “This is just to say that I think your stories… are the best that ever came out of South Africa”; and he calls Oom Schalk “the greatest story-teller ever”.
Now Patrick Mynhardt has chosen 35 stories and extracts from Bosman’s works in this volume, The Bosman I Like, pieces which have become well-known and dearly loved over the past twelve years by hundreds of thousands of South Africans.
